About Us (Penington Food Service) :
Penington Friends House — The Penington is a Quaker-run intergeneration community with 23 residents and 2 guest rooms located in Manhattan. The Penington kitchen provides community members and short-term guests with family style dinners, five evenings per week (Sunday-Thur). Leftovers are saved and available for residents’ lunches or chefs’ creative reuse.

Description of duties:
• Plan and prepare a healthy dinner 3 nights per week for as many residents and guests.
• Dinner prep to include a meat and vegan/vegetarian entrée each day along with veggies and a carbohydrate. Consideration of resident allergies.
• Cooking with produce from community supported agriculture.
• Clean the cookware, utensils and equipment used in meal preparation, leaving the kitchen in a clean and orderly state.
• Maintain an awareness of kitchen cost. Work with the manager to ensure compliance with the monthly budget for kitchen provisions.
• Work with the manager in reviewing inventory weekly and maintaining an adequate supply of bulk provisions.
• Make sure that consistent supplies are maintained and that when supplies are running low to make sure an order is placed in conjunction with other chef and manager.
• Keep the kitchen in good order. Oversee the pantry, refrigerators, and freezer for inventory, organization and cleanliness, including post meal preparation and cleanup.
• Receive and unpack food deliveries.
• Consult with manager regarding the cost and quality effectiveness of current and vendors. Assist the manager with research into potential vendors to maximize the quality of the food with a goal to use as much local, organic, pesticide free provisions as is feasible.
• Notify the manager when small kitchen appliances, tools, pots and pans, or other necessary equipment needs to be repaired or replaced.
• Skills: adaptability, flexibility, time management, sense of community building, love of food.

Hours: Approximately 12-15 hours per week. There is no time requirement for this labor provided the meal is ready to be served at the agreed upon time. Hours may vary according to the skill of the chef and the complexity of the meal.


Current salary: The chef is paid $171 per shift with a shift being the time it takes to prepare that day’s meal. There are 10 paid days off per year paid at $171 per day and inclusive of holidays, sick time and vacation.
