Part-Time and Full-Time Baristas for New Cafe + One Lead Barista

Grounded is a new cafe serving Partners Coffee and plant-forward bites, located within the Brooklyn Flow wellness space in Park Slope. We strive to provide high quality beverages and nutritious (and delicious) food to our guests, while serving as a friendly community gathering space.

We are seeking full-time and part-time baristas and counterpeople to be part of our opening team, as well as a full-time, lead barista who is interested in growing with us. We are looking for quick learners and people enthusiastic about coffee and nourishing food.

Responsibilities for all roles include:

  • Learn and follow recipes and techniques from managers, co-workers, and directly from our coffee roaster. We all strive to be better together!

  • Prepare coffee, espresso drinks, tea, smoothies, acai bowls, and serve pastries.

  • Work the front counter and ring up orders using the Toast POS system. Provide excellent customer service and foster a sense of community among guests.

  • Understand our full menu, and be able to guide customers, especially around dietary restrictions and food allergies.

  • Restock retail shelves.

  • Clear tables and wash dishes as needed.

The lead barista role will also be responsible for the following:

  • Train and guide less experienced staff on beverage preparation on our Victoria Arduino Eagle One espresso machine.

  • Supervise junior staff.

  • Practice proper cleaning and preventative maintenance for espresso and brewing equipment.

  • Occasionally receive and process deliveries. Handle food in a safe and compliant manner.

  • Keep inventory of beverage-related stock, and work closely with manager to ensure orders are placed in a timely manner.

Qualifications for all roles:

  • Some barista experience.

  • Familiarity with espresso drink preparation. Continuing education and barista brush ups are offered to all new staff through Partners Coffee Roasters.

  • Experience on a manual espresso machine. We will be using the Victoria Arduino Eagle One Volumetric Espresso Machine.

  • Strong work ethic. Self motivated and dependable.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Comfortable standing for long periods of time, squatting, twisting, and moving frequently. Able to lift, push and pull up to 30 lbs.

  • Able to communicate clearly with co-workers and customers.

  • Must be able to read and speak English, and understand basic math. Ability to speak additional languages is a plus!

  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow tickets and on-screen orders.

  • Work in a neat and organized manner.

  • Available on weekends and early mornings.

  • New York State Food Protection Certificate is a huge plus.

The lead barista role also requires the following:

  • 2+ years barista experience required.

  • Highly skilled in espresso drink preparation. Extensive experience on a manual espresso machine is a must.

  • Preference will be given to those with a New York State Food Protection Certificate; obtaining a certificate within 30 days of hire is a requirement of the position

Compensation:

  • Baristas - $15 - $18 per hour plus tips

  • Lead barista - $18 - $22 per hour plus tips
